• Question: hi, I was wondering if your job is time consuming, and if you have much free time or is your free time mainly filled with work. Also do you still have holidays and free weekends away from work?

      Hi Olivia,
Yeah, my job is time consuming but I still mange to have enough free time to do the things I like to relax (going to the cinema, listening to music, cooking etc). I still have plenty holidays and weekends away. Striking a balance between work and free time is very important to stay healthy and productive.

I think this is true for all engineers. Employers are very good at making sure they get the most from their employees and this means they have to be well rested and relaxed.

Hope that helps. Keep the questions coming!

      Hi Olivia

There are times when my job is time consuming – but that’s not all the time!
I have 2 small children and am lucky in that I can work flexibly – so I usually don’t work one day a week but get my hours in longer days, or in the evenings. That’s my choice and means I get a day with my children and still can work full time!

At weekends and most evenings we have family time – time to relax, for me to see friends and do other things – camping, reading, seeing friends etc.

Rory’s right – a work/life balance is really important and you do have to be strict with yourself about leaving work at work!

      Hi Olivia,

My job requires me to work 37 hours a week. At times I have to work longer, i.e. to meet a deadline, I have been known to work evenings and weekends. I once put it in a 19 hour day!
Generally evenings and weekends are mine though. I play in a brass band two nights a week which gets me out the house! I bought a house last year, it needs renovating so I spend a lot of my weekends doing DIY…if I don’t get distracted by my friends!

      Hi Olivia,
I think most jobs that you do, that you enjoy, will be time consuming, but that’s mainly because you like doing the job. I love my job and it does take up a lot of time, but as Rory pointed out engineers have an excellent work life balance compared too many other professions, with lots of holiday time. During the week I still have plenty of time to enjoy all my other pursuits, I am in training for a 5km run, take yoga classes, practice Indian dancing and of course keep up with all the latest TV shows!!!
